Well, I did anyway. As a sexually abused child I did not know that love was not intercourse. Eliza was grown before it became clear to her that what happened between her and her father was abuse. Moving into her grandmother’s house saved her. It took her out of her abusive father’s incestuous reach, and it gave her ties with a mother figure who nurtured her in ways that her birth mother had not. It was a safer, and far more affirming environment than her own home. Yet despite the move, she continued to experience abuse.

She also carried the weight of concern over how she looked and measured up to social standards as a divorced, unmarried Black woman mothering five children by different fathers. This additional social pressure compounded the effects of the violence, in that she also felt judged and stigmatized: I had five children. I had no man living there, okay!
