In that regard, he saw a shorter season (68 games from mid–November to mid–March) superior to a longer season. 31 Saperstein responded a few days later, noting that he had sent out the proposals to all interested parties. He went on to say that he felt it imperative to begin in 1960-1961, even if only six clubs could begin that year. He was now going to push to ascertain if there was financial backing for all the supposedly interested parties.

There would be a competitive league that was entertaining. This latter notion was largely brought about by an emphasis on and innovations in offense, a high level of scoring to excite the viewer. The plan worked to perfection for the AFL as the high-scoring offenses brought in viewers and allowed ABC to raise revenue rates for their ads. Ultimately, of course, this led to the great merger of the AFL/NFL in 1966, which ended the AFL’s independence but solidified the AFL teams and their futures in the NFL pantheon.

No, not that league. And there were those who were totally perplexed, having no idea whatsoever who or what the American Basketball League might be. These people far outnumbered those who actually were aware of the league’s brief existence, although even those folks were hard pressed to name a team or player in the ABL. And that is very sad, considering the effect that the ABL ultimately had on professional basketball and, later, by extension, on all of basketball, through the ABL’s unique rules.
