On all grounds, my work argues against positioning biography as an alternative, secondary, or unnecessary genre or narrative, just as it argues against the privileging of the discursive category "object" over "the artist" in the discipline. The alternative proposed here is to locate the biographies in their own reality, in discourse. Important issues concerning Gombrich's rejection of psychoanalysis and the appropriation of Popper's view of historicism remain to be addressed. I have not covered all of them in this book.
