You should always have full control of the muzzle, even when you trip or stumble. When movement or ground conditions mean that a loss of balance can occur be prepared to act to ensure that the muzzle remains pointing in the right direction and at the right things. If your finger is on the trigger at the moment balance is lost, get it quickly off the trigger and onto the side of the trigger guard. It is possible to do this even as you slip or fall. When carrying out action target shooting where movement from one target to the next is required, if the target is visible the weapon should be pointing at the target and when it is not visible the weapon should be pointing at the ground.
All these movements – some of which are opposing – occur as the pellet travels down the barrel, and the shooter must control all these movements skillfully in order for the barrel to maintain alignment with the target. You can now see why the spring pistol is without doubt the most challenging of all types of air pistol to shoot accurately. This should in no way put you off shooting a spring pistol; in fact it should encourage you to add one to your armoury, for you can never truly consider yourself an accomplished pistol marksman until you have mastered the spring pistol.
If your safety drills are not consistent such accidents are waiting to happen, so brand the safety rules onto your memory and make their practice an instinctive action that is performed whenever your hand touches a pistol. When the pistol is in the box the magazine sits on top of the box. Never under any circumstances place the pistol into the box loaded, even if the safety has been engaged. Whenever you pick up a pistol the first action you should perform is to check that the safety is engaged and then examine the breech (the end of the barrel into which projectiles are loaded) visually to ensure that the pistol is empty.
