Two colleges addressed these criticisms directly. The others responded covertly, planning the inner spaces of residence halls to conform to changing conceptions of womanhood. Several new women's colleges emerged, planned with the same intensity that had characterized the foundings of the Seven Sisters. Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, and Scripps were originally designed to be new colleges for twentieth-century women. Not only their organizational forms and buildings but also their curricula responded to the hostile evaluations of women's higher educational institutions in the 1920s.
