Two colleges addressed these criticisms directly. The others responded covertly, planning the inner spaces of residence halls to conform to changing conceptions of womanhood. Several new women's colleges emerged, planned with the same intensity that had characterized the foundings of the Seven Sisters. Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, and Scripps were originally designed to be new colleges for twentieth-century women. Not only their organizational forms and buildings but also their curricula responded to the hostile evaluations of women's higher educational institutions in the 1920s.

J. B. Jackson, whose intellectual influence has been profound, sensitized me to elements of good writing. At a later stage, I learned from the criticism of Marcia Burick, Patricia Cline Cohen, Roger Conover, Robert Dawidoff, Richard Dober, Neil Harris, Daniel Horowitz, Linda Kerber, and Carolyn Lyon.
