The survivors returned to Kamchatka the next summer. With one minor exception, these voyages mark the beginning of the Russian discovery of America. America had been found, but not explored.! The search for America was initiated by Peter the Great. Just when he became interested in finding America is not known. Several individuals in the course of his reign urged him to arrange a search for a northeast Finding America 5 passage to the Pacific, but to look for America was another matter. There is evidence from the report of a conversation he had in Amsterdam in 1697 with Nicolaas Witsen, a Dutch visitor to and student of Russia, that the latter thought there existed a close connection between Kamchatka and America in the form of a large island or American peninsula called Juan de Gama Land.

The most likely identification of "the land which goes to the north" is the unnamed land to the east of Kamchatka depicted on a map of Kamchatka 6 RAYMOND H. FISHER in Johann B. Homann's Grosser Atlas, published in 1725 in Nuremberg, a map printed in 1722 from one prepared in Russia and sent to Homann for publication. The eastern part of the land was not known because it was cut off by the right border of the map. It is believed that Bering carried a copy of this map with him on his voyage. This northward-going land reflected the belief in the existence of the mythical Juan de Gama Land between Asia and America.

As a condition for approval, Spanberg required him to write a detailed account of the 1732 voyage and submit the logbook and map of the voyage. The logbook he had long since sent to Iakutsk, and the map had never been made. At this juncture there appeared-how is unknown-an unsuspected primary document, the personal journal kept on the journey by Fedorov for his own information, a journal with more entries than he had made in the official logbook. In September 1743 Spanberg turned the journal over to Gvozdev and ordered him, with the assistance of two subpilots, to prepare a map of coastal Siberia from the Kamchatka River to the Chukotskii Peninsula.
